Hi all, I just wondered if getting mouth ulcers is part of RA. I have constantly had one (in various parts of my mouth) since I was diagnosed. Good job my appetite is so poor, too painful to eat at times. Any advice would be really appreciated. Pet xx

Hi Glenys, I havent started the mtx yet, going to start on 6 june, have only had joint injections so far. i dont think it is any medications causing the problem which is why I wondered if ulcers were something associated with the RA. I rarely had them before and now have one constantly. Thanks for your reply though, I will look forward to more in the future perhaps

Hi Pet
Regarding diet, I was told to eat what I want unless it affects me then obviously stop eating it. How would you know?

Hi Ive suffered mouth ulcers all my life but nothing prepared me for the ones i got with methetrexate! I have tried everything on the shelf for them and the only thing that helped was some little steroid pills that the dentist prescribed for me.. you let them dissolve in your mouth and they work too.. Well, here's LynW but she doesn't have an answer! I don't think the RA in itself will cause the mouth ulcers but it will make you more susceptible if your immune system is compromised due to certain RA drugs. Methotrexate, Leflunomide and a few others are known to cause mouth ulcers as a side effect. I asked for some Orabase a few weeks ago, the only thing I have ever come across that actually works on ulcers ... they don't manufacture it any more according to my GP. What a blow!! Dietary factors work for some people although to date evidence is non-existent. A sensible approach is the best way forward to ensure you get all the necessary minerals and vitamins provided by a varied diet. Lyn x

Hello,
I too suffer from ulcers. They started when I was on Methotrexate and I saw an Oral Health Consultant. He told me to take "friendly bacteria" such as is found in Activia Yogurts. I actually went to Holland and Barrett and got capsules to take which have the baceria in them. They are called Acidophylus. There have been 2 studies done on this bacteria and both have come to the conclusion that it helps prevent ulcers.
Having said that, I still get them. I stopped Mtx a year ago and have been on Penicillamine since then. So, I don't know if the bacteria is really helping or how much worse the ulcers might be if I was not taking the capsules.
Hope this is of help.
